ECSS

The European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) was established in 1993 to develop a single, coherent set of user-friendly space standards for use by all European agencies and industry

Members are European national space agencies and European industry (represented collectively by Eurospace), as well as other Associated Members and Observers.

ECSS coordinates and leads the development, publication and regular update and maintenance of a set of standards, which are divided into four disciplines:

Project management (planning, implementation, cost, schedule, risks, etc.

Engineering (system, electrical, mechanical, software, communication, control, etc.

Product assurance (PA, QA, dependability, safety, materials and processes, EEE parts, software PA, etc.

Sustainability (space debris, planetary protection)

ESA is a leading member of ECSS, which is supported by several Agencies and Industry. ECSS comprises an ECSS Steering Board and an ECSS Technical Authority.

The work of the ECSS results in continual improvements to the quality, functional integrity and compatibility of all elements of space projects, while reducing costs and helping foster new markets.

As mandated in the internal ESA administration instruction ESA/ADMIN/ORG(2009)3 and decided in ESA/C/CX11/Res1 (23 June 1994), ESA holds and provides the Executive Secretariat core function for ECSS (TEC-QES).
